Scientific Software and Data Management (SSDM), part of Scientific IT Services within central IT, develops software and data management solutions for research projects across the ETH domain, and provides a stimulating, flexible and family-friendly working environment. It is located in Zurich and Basel.

SSDM delivers IT solutions to internal customers across the ETH Domain. These include building web apps around scientific algorithms, parallelising and optimising computational code, integration of data management with scientific workflows, building customised DevOps environments and providing teaching and consultancy. Projects span the life sciences, natural sciences and engineering. Due to a growing number of projects, we are looking for a Software engineer (f/m) to complement our team.

Job description

You will work in small teams or individually on software development to support research projects in various academic departments at ETH. Projects can range from a few months to several years.

SSDM matches the type of service to specific customer needs and skills. To achieve this, SSDM developers have diverse backgrounds and skills and projects are assigned to individual developers on the basis of their skill set and experience. Currently there is a high demand for C++ development.

Your profile

The role will suit someone with a personal as well as professional interest in software development and DevOps. A minimum requirement is a degree in a quantitative discipline as well as practical experience with C++ and Python. R experience is also highly regarded as is experience with web app development using Django and ideally JavaScript libraries such as React and Bootstrap. Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies is also desired as well as the Numpy and Pandas Python packages. Beyond those, a higher degree and experience writing computational code would be desirable. A desire to design, implement and support your own solutions is necessary but also being able to work as part of a team. Above all, you should be passionate about IT and want to learn new technologies and understand scientific problems.

The position is based in Zurich though Basel as a main place of work is also possible. The initial employment period is one year with the possibility of renewal.
