The Institute of Business Information Technology at ZHAW offers a postdoc position in cybersecurity in a joint project with the Digital Society Initiative (DSI) of the University of Zurich. In an interesting interdisciplinary research and teaching environment between psychology, sociology, and computer science, the candidate will work in the field of human factors in cybersecurity.

The advertised position offers the opportunity to conduct innovative research on human factors in cybersecurity in Switzerland. In collaboration with the Digital Society Initiative (DSI) of the University of Zurich, you work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Business Information Technology at ZHAW on the joint project Cyber Resilience Network for the Canton of Zurich (CYREN) which is funded from 11/2022 until 10/2027 (pending interim project evaluation). The main goal of CYREN is to build a network that can make the region more resilient to cyber incidents through multi-stakeholder collaboration and knowledge exchange. The project is built on three pillars – Education (1), Research (2), and a Volunteer Network (3) – and seeks to stimulate collaboration between UZH, ZHAW, and beyond. The project is supported by the public sector at the cantonal, national, and international level (NCSC, Canton of Zurich, police), the private sector (insurance companies, cybersecurity service providers), and Swiss foundations (SWITCH).

Your main task will be to help build CYREN – especially with the Research (2) and Volunteer Network (3) pillars. Your work will focus on developing new research ideas and executing research on human factors in cybersecurity. Typical questions you will address revolve around (a) how to raise awareness of cyber risks among individuals and organizations (e.g., phishing emails, ransomware, outdated software), (b) how to engage people with cybersecurity (motivation, pro-social behavior), and (c) how to stimulate behavioral change and system adjustments that lead to greater security (behavior change).

As much of the project will rely on the input of various stakeholders to build a sustainable structure, you will often work to conceptualize and plan events with stakeholders and help to collect and consolidate emerging insights. You will be free to develop and execute your ideas in close collaboration with our team and external scientific and industry partners. You will support the dissemination of research findings across the community and publish them in scientific journals and conferences. As you will be working with experts from backgrounds in law, psychology, ethics, computer science, and more, interdisciplinary collaboration skills are central to this position. As a core member of the CYREN project, you will work closely with Dr. Nico Ebert (ZHAW) and Dr. Melanie Knieps (UZH).

Your tasks

  • Developing, managing, implementing, and publishing research projects together with the project team
  • Conceptualizing and implementing events (workshops, summer schools, etc.)
  • Supervise students (e.g., MSc)
  • Willingness to assume further tasks suitable to your interests, preferences, and aptitudes.
  • Ph.D. in psychology, sociology, behavioral economics, information systems, computer science, or a related field
  • Knowledge of digitalization topics, especially cybersecurity, privacy, and internet governance
  • Sound knowledge of quantitative and qualitative methods
  • Experience with project management and event planning a plus
  • Positive mindset, eagerness to learn, creativity in problem-solving
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Profound knowledge of English (written and oral), good command of German or willingness to acquire it, French is a plus

The position is initially limited to one year, with the option to extend.
