The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
The WSL group Phytopathology is part of the Research Unit Forest Health and Biotic Interactions and investigates fungal diseases of forest trees with particular emphasis on invasive pathogens. Within the European project Forsaid “Forest surveillance with artificial intelligence and digital technologies“, we offer a two-year position, starting in March 2025 or by agreement, as a
Invasive pests and pathogens are a growing concern for forest worldwide. An early detection of such organisms significantly increases chances to prevent and contain the damage they may cause. In this project you will develop, validate, and implement diagnostic protocols to identify the emerald ash borer Agrilus planipennis and the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica in insect trap liquid and water running down from tree stems using quantitative PCR, droplet digital PCR and metabarcoding. Planned work also includes field visits in Europe for collection of eDNA samples to validate and test the developed approaches, in collaboration with partners of the Forest Entomology group at WSL and with international researchers.
You have a PhD in natural sciences with a background in forest pathology and entomology. You have proven experience in working with environmental DNA, using molecular techniques, and the analysis of genetic data, preferably with R. You can translate your results on early detection strategies in nurseries, urban trees, or forest stands into recommendations for practical phytosanitary solutions. You have demonstrated your ability to carry out research projects efficiently, including the publication of the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. You have good oral and written skills in English. Futhermore you are enthusiastic, proactive and highly motivated.
